ESSEX Chief Constable Jim Barker-McCardle has agreed to call in the Met police to investigate expenses claims by Essex Police Authority.
The authority had instructed its auditors to investigate expenses overpayments to members of the authority.
The authority is made up of councillors from Essex county, Southend and Thurrock councils and some independent members.
A statement by the authority said in light of the auditor's findings, and on the advice of Mr Barker-McCardle, it was felt appropriate to call in the Met to investigate the auditor's findings.
An authority spokesman said: "They (the Met) have agreed and the investigation is ongoing.
"It will be understood that whilst police investigations are continuing no further statements can be made."
