A man charged in connection with a hit-and-run in Westcliff sobbed in the courtroom dock.
Unemployed Marek Kolton, 26, of Princes Street, Southend, was arrested in connection with the incident on Monday afternoon.
Six-year-old Milton Hall school pupil Joseph Ball died after he was struck by a motorbike while crossing London Road with his family at 3.30pm.
Kolton was charged with death by dangerous driving, failing to stop, driving without insurance and driving without a licence.
He wept as he appeared at Southend Magistrates court yesterday.
He was remanded in custody until his next appearance on January 26.
