A FAMILY business which helped decorate homes across south Essex with soft furnishings for more than 70 years has suddenly closed.

The Irish Linen House, in London Road, Leigh, which made and sold curtains and blinds, now stands empty.

There is a small sign on the door which says the business ceased trading “with great regret”.

Russell Brigden, of sewing machine retailer Super Stitch, also in London Road, said the closure was the latest sign of how tough things have got for retailers.

He said: “It was run by two brothers and the family name was Harforth.

“I think it happened on the Friday and they were clearing out on the Saturday.

“It was a real shame as it was a good quality shop, but it is so competitive out there now.

“I think the business had a few contracts making curtains for schools and colleges and they might still be doing that side of things from somewhere else.”

Other traders in London Road said they believed the business was based in Rayleigh before moving to Leigh 30 years ago.

There are now about six empty shops in the parade in London Road.

Businesses which have recently stopped trading include a pet shop, camera shop and a greengrocers.

However, Mr Brigden added: “Some are under offer and are being re-fitted.

“It is a good place to shop here because we have a free car park and lay-bys for people to pull into. We have free public toilets too.”

Pat Holden, chairman of Leigh Town Council, added: “It’s horrendous news as it is one of our really well-known traditional businesses.”

It is not known why the company ceased trading, but a contact number on the door was given for Begbies Traynor, business rescue, recovery and restructuring specialists.

No one from Begbies Traynor was able to provide a comment.
