A DRUNKEN yob vandalised a doctors’ surgery while showing off in front of his pal.

Adam Wells, 22, of Valkyrie Road, Westcliff, downed a whole bottle of wine and a bottle of port before smashing a window of the Valkyrie Road surgery.

In mitigation, Roger Neild explained: “Mr Wells was very intoxicated and was walking past with his friend.

“To show off, he punched the window intending to break it. He had no intention of stealing from the property.

“This incident resulted in relatively low damage. He admitted what he had done to the police and has entered an early guilty plea.”

Mr Wells, who sustained cuts to his hand, pleaded guilty to the criminal damage at Southend Magistrates’ Court.

The damage was caused during the weekend of August 26 to 28.

Mr Neild added Mr Wells felt remorseful for his actions, which he realised were of an antisocial nature.

The defendant expressed a wish to write a letter of apology to the doctors and intends to make amends for the inconvenience.

Replacing the window cost £150, which Mr Wells was not ordered to pay. Andrew Metcalf, practice manager, said: “Thankfully incidents such as these are extremely rare and I have only been called out on one other occasion.

“Fortunately, it wasn’t a huge amount of money this time.”

Mr Wells was remanded custody to reappear before Basildon Crown Court, on December 16, for a separate offence of burglary.

Despite his guilty plea, his request for bail was declined due to the nature of the criminal damage offence, which caused disruption to an important public amenity.
