YOBS slashed 34 tyres in just one night as they went on a vandalism spree in Pitsea and Vange.

In total 18 vehicles were hit. The cost of repairing all the damage is estimated by police at £2,680, but that figure could grow.

The thugs struck overnight on Sunday.

Vans and cars were targeted across several roads, including Alcotes, Sandon Road, Lindsell Green, Collingwood Road, Maplin Gardens, Linsell Lane and Lambourne Green.

Beech Road was the worst hit with ten vehicles targeted by the vandals. One vehicle parked there – a Vauxhall Vivaro – had three tyres slashed, causing £450 damage.

Acting Chief Insp Richard Sage, of Basildon police, said officers would be increasing patrols in the area.

He said: “This is an extensive amount of damage that has been caused by these mindless vandals.

“Not only has this created a lot of hassle for 18 people, but will also cost them a lot to get fixed and sort out with insurance companies, which is something no one needs in the run-up to Christmas.

“My officers have been actively patrolling the area, and will continue to do so to prevent any more incidents.

“They have also been dropping letters in the area to ask anyone with any information to contact us.

“Please, if you saw anything suspicious Sunday night, or if you know who is responsible, call us so we can make sure that justice is served for these victims.”

Anyone with any information can contact the Basildon East neighbourhood policing team on 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously, on 0800 555111.
