SICKENED charity officials have told how they are the latest victims of cruel metal thieves.

The crooks stole metal signs from the organisation’s building and now the charity, for children with special needs, will have to fork out hundreds of pounds to replace them.

Brighter Opportunities through Supported Play, based in Crown Yard, off Billericay High Street, provides play activities for children with special needs, which also allows their parents crucial respite.

But staff were shocked to discover metal signs with the charity’s name and logo had been stolen from the front and back of the building.

Sheridan Leigh, who is a trustee of the organisation, said: “This really is quite despicable to steal from a charity.

“Like every charity we are reliant on funding and something like this is just an additional cost.

“Also, if you claim through your insurance, your premiums go up and you have to pay the excess, which in many cases ends up more expensive than just replacing the actual stolen item. However, we want to remain visible, so we will have to pay to replace the signs.”

Earlier this week the Echo told how the Pioneer School, in Ghyllgrove, Basildon, was forced to close because thieves stole copper piping, leaving it without heating.

The school still remains closed. Brighter Opportunities through Supported Play uses the school to hold play activities for children with special needs on Saturdays.

Mr Leigh said: “This is a double whammy for us as we are unsure when we will be able to return to the Pioneer School. I know metal theft is a problem, but it’s just unacceptable.

“When these people start targeting schools and charities it shows how callous they are.”

The stolen signs have not yet been reported to police.

Police in Basildon this week launched a major operation, aimed at those selling metal at scrapyards, in a bid to snare thieves.

The charity will be hosting a stand at the Billericay High Street Christmas fair on Sunday, December 4.
