A SCHOOL is gearing up to celebrate its 50th anniversary this summer.

The King Edmund School, in Rochford, originally called Rochford County Secondary, has taught hundreds of children since it opened.

Over the years, the school has seen many changes, but its community ties have remained strong.

Former pupils include frontbench Tory MP, Mike Penning, and his daughters, Adele and Abby.

Headteacher Jonathan Osborn, who joined in Sept-ember 2010, said he was proud to be part of the school in its landmark year.

He said: “I think what attracted me to King Edmund was the school has a very interesting mixture of pupils of urban and rural backgrounds. It is a true comprehensive and takes kids from all walks of life. It is a community and it is very caring.

“I am only the fourth or fifth headteacher the school has had, that is quite rare for schools.”

As part of the celebrations, the school is organising a funday for residents to give something back to the community.

He added: “It has been such good fun planning the celebration. There is great enthusiasm for what we are doing.”

A community funday will be held on Saturday, June 23, on the school playing fields. From noon until 4pm, locals are invited to take part in games and activities.

There will be a 50 years of King Edmund School exhibition with photographs and memorabilia, as well as an art exhibition by pupils. Bouncy castles, sports and music and drama performances from children will keep the crowds entertained. There will also be stalls selling ice cream, hot dogs, candy floss and homemade cupcakes.
