A DEVASTATED husband has spoken of the moment he discovered burglars had smashed their way into his home and stolen his late wife’s wedding ring.

Gordon Ogden arrived home and found the double-glazed back door to his bungalow in Sutton Road, Rochford, near to the junction with Sutton Court Drive, had been smashed and the jewellery gone.

He had put his and his late wife Angela’s gold wedding rings in a drawer for safekeeping but they and £30 in cash had been taken.

Angela died suddenly five years ago aged just 59.

Mr Ogden, 61, said: “That hurts the most. It is the sentimental value of the jewellery taken more than anything else. The other stuff was stuff I had bought her over the years for Christmas and birthdays. It is your wedding rings that are most important.”

Mr Ogden said the whole thing had been a horrible shock.

He added: “I have never been burgled in my life. They had tried to use a crowbar to open the door then they smashed the whole glass and got in. I was glad they didn’t trash the place, all they wanted was jewellery and cash.
“They will probably offer them to a local jeweller.”

The rings were both gold, one is a twisted design and the other is a plain gold band. Also taken was a ring with an amethyst stone and some gold earrings.

Police are appealing for witnesses to the burglary which happened between 12pm and 4pm on Friday, October 19.
