Dame Mary Berry, known for showing the nation how to cook and perfect baking skills, has announced a new documentary that will air next week.

The 90-year-old continues to write and cook and is now taking time to look back at her long and successful career in food with the early days of her career being back in the 1960s.

Mary at 90: A Lifetime of Cooking will be released in six parts on BBC Two and iPlayer.

Berry’s face won’t be the only familiar one you’ll notice in the new series with several of her celebrity friends joining her too, including Alan Titchmarsh, Gabby Logan and Jamie Oliver.

Dame Mary shows them how to make some of her all-time favourite recipes, sharing delightful tales from her culinary legacy through her personal archive collection and old footage.

As well as revisiting some of her most iconic dishes, she updates some classic recipes and introduces some brand-new recipes proving that even in her 90th year it’s never too late to try new things.

Speaking to the BBC about her new series, Dame Mary said: “Oh it’s so exciting I took a trip down memory lane reflecting on some of the memorable moments of my cooking career with some of my friends new and old.”

What makes cooking so special for Mary Berry?

Mary told the BBC: “Cooking is something everyone has to do every day. People sort of cope with breakfast quite easily; lunch for many people is a quick meal, but at the end of the day, when people come home from work, that's the meal that everybody hopes to take time to enjoy. Whether on their own, or as a family, or with flatmates and friends.

“I want to produce recipes that people can share together which are achievable and can be cost efficient too which is tasty.

“If I can help people with some inspiration for recipes, make a suggestion for a dinner party meal, or help non-cooks with a step-by-step guide to an easy supper – that’s what brings me joy.”

Dame Mary shows no sign of slowing down just yet, telling the BBC: “Being 90 and still cooking. I've still got lots of ideas. And the great thing is, I've still got a great team who work alongside me. We love what we do, we get together, and I'm always jotting notes in the little notebook.

“I took my granddaughter out for Sunday lunch, and we had a stuffed courgette with a ratatouille. It was beautifully presented, and I noted that down. I never take a picture, but it’s very much in my mind and I’ll talk to the team, and we’ll talk about trying it a different way.

“I just want to keep doing what I love.”

Which celebrities will join Mary Berry in new series?

Tom Allen, Gabby Logan, Jamie Oliver, Alex Jones, Alan Titchmarsh and Kiell Smith-Bynoe will all feature in the new BBC series.

Berry said she “cooked with them all – some new recipes, some reinvented classics.”
