A CASH reward is being offered to anyone who can provide information which leads to a conviction after a series of major cable thefts.

Large sections of live cable have been stolen from the underground networks on rural routes across the area over the past three months.

Braintree, Dunmow, Halstead and Wakes Colne have all been affected by the thefts, which left some residents without phone lines, broadband and TV.

Now, up to £1,000 is being offered by Openreach and Crimestoppers to anyone who can give information which helps find the culprits.

Dave Hunter, of Crimestoppers, said: “Theft of communications cables and equipment causes enormous disruption.

“These people’s lives are being adversely affected and the impact is hardest felt in rural communities.

“In a technological age, having no access to broadband and other communications services can cause real problems to individuals, families and communities.

“It can even prevent you from getting hold of the emergency services.

“Someone will know who is behind these incidents.”

Damage has also been caused to nearby farmland in several of the incidents where cables were dragged across fields by crooks.

Openreach say engineers are working to restore services to customers affected by the thefts.

Spokesman Bernie Auguste said: “These incidents have impacted on the day-to-day lives of people across the region.

“We are working closely with the police to catch those who are responsible and have deployed additional security enhancements across the area, but we also need your help.

“Please be vigilant and if you saw anything suspicious on or around the time of the incidents, then please contact the charity Crimestoppers or speak directly to the police.”
