A LORRY driver who was flown to hospital following a seven vehicle crash on the A13 remains in hospital in a serious but stable condition.
The man had to be cut free from his lorry by firefighters following the pile-up, which happened at about 8.50am yesterday.
Police closed the road in both directions near the Manorway junction, between Stanford-le-Hope and the Five Bells interchange, to allow for the Herts Air Ambulance to land on the carriageway.
The lorry driver was airlifted to the Royal London Hospital with multiple leg injuries, which were described at the time at life-changing and life-threatening.
Police have now confirmed that the man's condition is stable and no longer critical.
A second person was taken to Basildon Hospital by land ambulance in a stable condition.
Paramedics also treated a third person at the scene but they did not require hospital treatment.
An ambulance crew, an ambulance officer, the air ambulance, a volunteer doctor and the hazardous area response team were also at the scene.
Officers are appealing for witnesses or anyone with information about the circumstances leading up to the collision to contact them on 101.
