A SCHOOL is celebrating the chess achievements of six of its pupils.
The chess club at Leigh North Street Primary School was set up by parents last year and this year took part in the Delancey Schools Chess Challenge.
Six students from the school made it through to the “Megafinal”, which was held at Kingswood School in Basildon.
James Paul, Kian Punt, Maximos Papatheodorou and Harry Smith were awarded certificates while William Smith won the Supremo U7s title.
William Smith will now compete, along with three other children from Essex, in the Southern England “Gigafinal” in late June.
Headteacher Ant Hautler said: “Our children have achieved wonderful team results as well as personal bests.
“We are thankful to our parent volunteers who have worked with LNSP children ensuring they develop the knowledge and skill required to play such a complex game.” William’s teammates are now hoping he can go one better.
