IT is not too late for would-be junior anglers to try their hand at sea angling this weekend.

Members of Southend Pier Angling Forum and Thorpe Bay Angling Association are staging their annual coaching session on Sunday on Southend Pier.

The event is intended as an introduction to the sport and is hosted by experienced anglers.

“It is an event for anyone with little experience of angling who would like to try their hand at fishing from Southend Pier,” said Mick Sharp, from Southend Pier Angling Forum.

“Local anglers have volunteered to share their experience and show participants the basic skills of angling.”

The taster session runs between 1.30pm and 5.30pm on June 1 and will cover subjects including fish identification, fishing rules and minimum sizes, fish handling, conservation and safety, types of rods and reels, types of tackle plus types of fishing bait and how to keep it.

Practical guidance will be given from the pier stem including correct casting, baiting up and fish landing.

Participants can bring their own tackle or equipment will be loaned. Entry to the pier will be free for supervising anglers and all participants and responsible adults attending with the youngsters.

Each participant will be issued with an entrance badge and unique number for a prize draw that will take place at the end of the final session.

Interested participants can receive a registration form by emailing Mick Sharp at msharp19@yahoo.com. There are limited places left and applicants must register with Mick.
