IGOE HOLDS HIS NERVE TO SEAL PENALTY SHOOT-OUT WIN

IT was penalty shoot-out joy for Westcliff High School for Boys in their Essex play-off final.
Liam Igoe scored the winning penalty against Campion after goalkeeper Keiran Dillane had made a crucial save.

The game – between two sides who had won their respective division two titles – was a nervy affair with both teams struggling to string any moves of real quality together.

But Westcliff began to create several chances on the counter attack.

However, it was Campion who struck first, with a well taken goal just before half time.

The second half followed in a similar pattern with Westcliff playing on the counter-attack and they struck the equaliser midway through the half when Daniel Gammaldi expertly curled a 25-yard free kick into the top corner.

From then on Westcliff pushed hard for the win, with Damola Akinyemi and Callum Foakes coming close to taking the game, however the match finished 1-1, sending the game into extra time.

Westcliff continued to dominate with man-of-the-match William Simpson denied by a good save from the Campion keeper while at the other end, the Westcliff defence remained firm as the game went to penalties, and Rob Young.
Both teams scored their first penalty and then both missed the target with wild second shots.

With the scores tied at 2-2 after three, Westcliff scored their fourth and then goalkeeper Keiran Dillane crucially saved Campion’s spot kick.

It was left to Liam Igoe to step up and secure a 4-2 win on penalties for Westcliff and be crowned the Essex play-off Champions.
