SOUTHEND United have completed the signing of winger Myles Weston.

As was revealed in Friday’s Echosport, the Shrimpers were keen to bring the former Gillingham man to Roots Hall.

And Weston has now signed a two year deal at the club after insisting the chance to work with Blues boss Phil Brown was too good to turn down.

“The manager was one of the main reasons why I decided to join the football club,” confirmed the 26-year-old.

“Once I had spoken to the manager, there was only one place I wanted to come and that was Southend United.

“He wanted me to join and the way he was talking about the club was really positive. It made me want to be a part of that and that’s why I decided to join.”

Weston had also been tracked by Oxford United.

But a number of his former team-mates advised him to opt for the Shrimpers.

“I know it’s a good club with lots of ambition and a number of good friends in the game have played for this football club and enjoyed their time here,” said the former England youth international.

“I’ve played at Roots Hall a few times and it’s a great ground with a real atmosphere created so I can’t wait to get started.”

Weston made 43 appearances for Gillingham last season but was not offered a new deal by manager Peter Taylor.

The winger is therefore determined to impress for the Shrimpers and entertain the club’s supporters.

“I like to think I can bring excitement to the pitch with Southend,” said Weston.

“My game is all about taking people on and running at defences.

“Hopefully I can get the Southend fans up off their feet and give them something to cheer about.

“I feel I can get the better of defenders in this division with my pace and I’m looking forward to that.”

Weston can also play as a striker if required and is looking for more success in League Two after helping Gills win the title back in 2013.

“Winning the league with Gillingham was my first ever title and it was a great experience that I can always look back on so more of the same would be great with Southend,” said Weston.

“I want to win promotion here and I know they just missed out last season but that should make the players hungrier this season to go and get automatic promotion.

“The manager talked about 20 clean sheets and that’s very impressive, so hopefully we can do that again and I can help add some goals at the other end.”
