SOUTH Essex Gymnastics Club’s Max Whitlock flies out to China tomorrow hoping to end his terrific but tiring 2014 season with more success at the World Championships.

Whitlock, who trains in Basildon, has already won a combined total of four gold medals, two silvers and one bronze at the European Championships and Commonwealth Games this year.

But he is not finished yet.

“It’s been a hard year going from Europeans to the Commonwealths and now the World Championships but I’m looking forward to getting out there,” said the 21-year-old.

“I’ll be looking to make sure I enjoy it, perform like I have been doing in training and perform clean routines.

“That’s all I can focus on doing and making sure I enjoy it.”

The World Championships take place every year in gymnastics.

Last season, 21-year-old finished second on the pommel horse and fourth in the all around competition.

This time around, the team event will also be included and Whitlock is looking to improve on those results.

“The team event takes place every other year in the World Championships and we’re looking to do well in that,” said Whitlock.

“I’m in all six events, including that and it’s going to be very tough.”

But Whitlock does not feel under pressure to perform well.

The youngster is now a leading light in the sport after winning three gold medals at the Commonwealth Games in July.

That came after Whitlock had previously won two bronzes at the London 2012 Olympics.

Yet he is not concerned about the added level of expectancy that now surrounds him.

“I don’t really think about anything like that and I don’t put myself under any extra pressure,” said Whitlock.

“If anything I use it to boost my confidence because it shows I can perform well in the big events.

“Hopefully I can do that again in China and can end what has been a great season with more good performances before I can finally have a bit of a rest.”

The World Championships, which are being held in Nanning, get underway on Friday October 3.
