RUGBY LEAGUE: Southend Spartans full-back Owen Young’s season has been capped off by him winning London Junior Leagues prestigious “Man of Steel Award” at the Emirates Stadium in London.

Fresh from completing a clean sweep in the London Origin regional representative series, Young was presented with his award by London Broncos young player of the year, Joe Keyes.

And Spartans’ chairman Steve Drew felt Young fully deserved the award.

“Owen has demonstrated a maturity and understanding of the game far beyond his years,” said Drew.

“His core skills, physical and mental strength all contribute to make him a superbly rounded player.

“At the recent Origin Series, Owen was watched by some very influential people including London Broncos head coach Joey Grima.

“He looks set to play Rugby League at the highest level and for him to walk away with the Man of Steel award is amazing, I’m over the moon for him.”

But Owen was not the only winner on the night, with Southend Spartans picking up “Primary Club of the Year 2014”.

And that also delighted Drew.

“Picking up club of the year was a total surprise, especially considering the number and quality of other clubs in the region,” said Drew.

“I was delighted to receive the award on behalf of the club’s volunteers whose hard work and dedication week in week out won this award for the club.”
