VANGE potter Stuart Bingham admits he still has work to do if he is to go far in the UK Snooker Championship after coming through the second round on Sunday.

The 38-year-old beat Alfie Burden 6-3 at the York Barbican, capping off a comfortable performance with a break of 142 in frame five, the highest of the tournament so far.

At 2-2 Bingham’s massive score helped him wrestle the momentum after Burden had taken consecutive frames, winning three on the bounce to take control of the match.

World number nine Bingham now faces young-gun Joel Walker for a place in the last 16 and he was thrilled to make it through a tough encounter with Burden.

“We’ve had our battles over the years and he is one of those I just can’t pull away from,” he said. “At 2-0 I’m thinking ‘OK you are playing well’ but he is like a little rottweiler.

“He showed his class to come back to 2-2 and first frame back I made a 142, then I got lucky in the end to go to 5-2 when I got a double on the blue.

“I scored well when I got my chance, especially the 142. My safety shots need a little bit of work, but my cueing is good and the table was lovely.”

Bingham made the semi-finals of this competition last year, but is not getting ahead of himself as he looks to go one better this time around.

He added: “I am playing well, the season has been really good for me so I am just taking it one match at a time.

“The next round will be tough whoever it is. I was aiming for the last 16, I am in the last 32 now, anything else is a bonus after that.”
