SOUTHEND United striker Barry Corr was a relieved and happy man after helping the Shrimpers secure a 1-0 win at Cambridge United on Boxing Day.

The Irishman headed home the only goal of the game at the Abbey Stadium.

But Corr’s well taken header came after he had spurned an excellent chance to score in the first half.

“We should have been in front at the break because I should’ve scored,” said the 29-year-old.

“I’m not really sure what I was doing and I thought I had more time than I actually did.

“But thankfully I could make amends in the second half.

“The manager actually said to me at half-time, go and be the match winner, and I’m delighted that was the case.”

Corr’s header, from David Worrall’s right wing cross, was his fifth goal of the season.

And, despite wishing he had netted a few more, the striker has been buoyed by his recent form in front of goal.

“From the Portsmouth game onwards I’ve got five goals in 11 starts and five assists too so it’s been going OK, “said Corr.

“It’s not as many as I want but it’s getting better.

“Being honest, I would probably like to play alongside someone but I don’t mind doing what I’m doing and I hope I do a good job for the team.

“It was great to win at Cambridge, especially for the fans because they were fantastic.

“But now we want to go and do the same against Dagenham.”
