SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown slammed his side for gifting promotion rivals Wycombe Wanderers an undeserved share of the spoils at Roots Hall on Saturday.

The Shrimpers twice led through in-form striker Barry Corr but had to settle for a 2-2 draw when Chairboys defender Alfie Mawson headed home five minutes from time.

And that infuriated Shrimpers boss Brown, who was in charge of the club for the 100th time.

“It’s two points dropped and we’ve absolutely thrown them away if I’m honest about it,” said Brown.

“The quality of our play was better than Wycombe’s but you just can’t gift teams goals like we did or waste chances like that either.

“It’s poor play and poor management of the game as well.

“We’ve gifted them a draw and it’s incredibly frustrating and disappointing.”

The draw did at least see the Shrimpers move up to fourth in the League Two table.

But they remain five points behind third placed Wycombe after failing to net a number of fantastic opportunities in the second half.

“We should really have scored four, five or six goals,” fumed Brown.

“Joe Pigott missed a one on one and Kevan Hurst missed a tap in at the second attempt.

“Joe was also not in the six yard box when he should have been to meet a cross from Dave Worrall and Myles Weston had a great chance too after he came on.

“I could go on and on but it’s all a waste of time when you just get a point against a team we were clearly better than.”

However, despite his disappointment, Brown believes Blues are still in the race for automatic promotion.

And he is not resigned to finishing in the play-off positions.

“We have 33 points still to play for and there were more strange results on Saturday which showed what can happen,” said Brown.

“We’ve played Wycombe off the park so there are positives to take from that and there are also loads of twists and turns left.

“There are loads of stories still to come too and we’re going to be part of a big story here.”
