WOODLANDS School enjoyed a historic day at the Basildon and Billericay District Athletics day, as it came top of the pile for the first time in its history.
The Basildon school romped to a superb win at the Basildon Sporting Village, also coming first in the track and field events and the 4x100m relay against the other seven schools, to end with 761 points.
Mayflower High School (601 points) came in second ahead of the Billericay School in third (545).
But Woodlands made the headlines, as they came first in Years 7, 8 and 9 in the boys competition, only second to the Billericay School in Years 10 and 11.
In the girls competition, Woodlands won the Year 7 category, while De La Salle took the honours in Year 8. Mayflower won in Year 9 and Beauchamps High School won in Years 10 and 11.
And Woodlands’ head of PE Andy Badger said it was a hugely successful day for the school and its athletes.
“To win in the manner that we did shows how much hard work the pupils and the staff have put in this year,” he said. “We have a very committed group and I am really pleased they did so well.
“Our previous best was second but we bettered our performance from last year by 100 points so it was a great day all round.”
