SOUTHEND Saxons’ director of rugby Chris Green has already started his rebuilding job of the club.

Saturday’s 32-15 defeat at table-topping Cambridge confirmed Southend’s relegation from National Two South.

But Green is determined to help Saxons bounce back from the disappointment.

“We need to rebuild and that’s starting from now,” said Green. “We’re talking to players and it could well be that one or two leave and a few changes take place.

“But we need to move forward and make sure we’re as strong as possible to try and get back into this league as soon as possible.”

Southend still have two matches remaining of the current campaign.

And Green felt Saxons paid the price for losing too many of their close contests.

“We’ve had four or five games we’ve lost that were quite close and three we’ve drawn which we should have won as well,” said Green.

“When that keeps on happening you’re in trouble and that’s what’s happened with us.

“It’s disappointing for relegation to be confirmed but it’s been on the cards for a while and it’s all about how we bounce back now.”

And Green was buoyed by his side’s display at Cambridge.

“We were winning up until 59 minutes and attitude wise it was the best we’ve been all season,” said Green.

“But Cambridge’s strength in depth made the difference at the end.”
