SAM Fombo is ready to step up his comeback from a knee injury when Southend Saxons head to Guildford today.

The powerful back row made his first appearance since February when coming on against table-topping Wimbledon last weekend.

And Fombo, who scored a try after his introduction, is delighted to be back in action.

“It was good to get back on the field,” said Fombo.

“It’s boring watching to be honest and if things go wrong you want to be out there to help the lads out.

“It was pleasing to be able to do that on Saturday and hopefully I can build on that now.”

However, Fombo knows he may have to remain patient in his pursuit of more appearances.

“It’s going to be tough to get back in the squad because the guys that have taken my spot have been playing well,” said Fombo.

“So whatever time I get on the pitch I’ll do my best but hopefully I’ll get my shirt back.”

Fombo was forced to the sidelined after suffering a tear in his meniscus as well as cartilage damage.

The back row was keen to thank Ben Clarkson and Luke Brewster for their help in getting him back fit.

But he was disappointed to return to action with a 34-12 defeat to Wimbledon at Warners Bridge.

“We were a bit sloppy to be honest,” said Fombo.

“We’d get them on the back foot but then knock it on and lose the momentum we had in the first place.”

The defeat pushed Southend down to ninth in the National Three London & SE standings.

But Fombo is desperate to climb back up the table and mount a push for promotion.

“Our one goal for this season is to bounce back up,” said Fombo.

“The very minimum is making the play-offs and we’re certainly not planning to stay in this league for another year.

“We need to fix things up quickly to achieve it, starting with tomorrow.”
