BENFLEET-BASED Michael Kightly has tied his long term future to Wolverhampton Wanderers by signing a new four-year contract.

The former Southend United winger impressed at Molineux last season and attracted interest from a host of Premiership clubs including Manchester United, Aston Villa and Everton.

But the fans' favourite has opted to extend his spell with Mick McCarthy's men.

"I have said from day one that I'm happy here and would sign a longer contract if I was offered one," said Kightly, 21.

"The discussions on personal terms went well and now I can look forward to another four good years here."

Kightly now hopes to help Wolves reach the Premiership following their 4-2 defeat to Midlands rivals West Bromwich Albion in last season's Championship play-off semi-final.

And he believes they will again be pushing for promotion next season.

"I knew it was a big club when I first arrived but, with the stadium and set up here, I feel it is one of the best in the league now," he added.

"The ambition is to kick on and get into the Premier League and I want to be a part of it and play at the highest level.

"The way the fans have treated me has been unbelievable and I want to show some loyalty to them and help the club get up.

"We had a good chance with the squad we had last year and with a couple of additions then I think our chances will be even better.

"I'm settled in the area which is a big part of things, and have been happy staying in my apartment.

"But, in the next couple of months, I'll be looking for a house to settle down in now that I have the stability that the new contract has given me."

Wolves' chief executive Jez Moxey was also delighted to have completed contract talks with Kightly.

"Michael has made a big impression on everyone since he joined us from Grays," he said.

"It was a big step up for him from non-league football and he has handled it superbly. He has also been an exemplary professional and is great personality around the club.

"He has typified the sort of player we want here at Wolves - young, talented and a desire to work hard for the cause."
