MATTHEW Doe won a trio of titles at the Essex Junior Open held a Billericay Lawn Tennis Club.

The 16-year-old, who is a member of the Ellesse Academy which is also based at Billericay, won both the under 16 and under 18 singles finals before teaming up with Josh Ratnage to win the under 18 doubles.

But Matthew was not the only Ellesse Academy player to triumph on home soil, much to the delight of club spokesperson Clare Doe.

“The standard of tennis was exceptional, with the Ellesse Academy players proving themselves as their hard work really paid off,” said Clare.

“Between the boys and girls they won the under 18s girls and boys singles and 18s girls and boys doubles.

“Both finalists in 16 boys were academy players.

“One of the boys 12 finalists trains at the academy and the under nine was won by an academy player so it was great to see.”

Nicole Tidder was among those celebrating as she triumphed in the under nine category.

Naya Kauders did likewise in the girls under 18 competition before she partnered Tyra-Nicole Whyte to win the doubles in the same age-group.

But Clare was also happy to see the competition well attended.

“The Essex Open once again proved a great success with about 300 players entering across the age groups,” said Clare.

“The weather proved good apart from a few downpours so rain stopped play only a couple of times.

“Overall it was an excellent event.

“Many of the visiting players expressed what a beautiful club Billericay was and how successful its home players were. “The behind the scenes team kept everyone well fed and watered, the grounds were impeccable and all the courts were in great shape.

“A special thanks must go to Martin Capper and Izzy Hyde for their hard work.”

The youngsters are now preparing for the Essex Closed event at the end of the month.
