GRAYS Athletic got their new Blue Square Premier season underway with a goalless draw at Plainmoor.
The Gulls were relegated from the Football League last season and Justin Edinburgh's troops were looking to claim and early scalp following a decent pre-season build up.
Grays came closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half when the lively Mark Marshall, playing on the left wing, set up striker Danny Kedwell, whose flick was cleared off the Torquay goalline by defender Steve Woods.
And a late effort by Marshall was turned against the post by Gulls keeper Simon Rayner.
Torquay came back into the match after half time and saw one 30-yard shot from substitute Chris Zebroski fly just inches over the crossbar.
Les Phillips then saw his header saved by Grays keeper Ross Flitney as the visitors came under increasing pressure.
