WHEN Thorpe Hall Ladies held their open meeting, star guest was Beverly Lewis.

Now best known as a BBC TV golf commentator, Beverly struck a blow for the fair sex when she became the first female to be elected captain of the PGA, the game's ruling body.

The competition was won by Lesley Pearce and daughter Joanna Pearce with 80 Stableford points over 36 holes.

Lesley, along with Thorpe's Lady secretary Barbara Knowles, is a former schoolmate of Beverly's at Southend High for Girls.

She is a member at The Warren and her daughter flew over from Germany, where she is now living, especially to play in the competition.

She is a member of Elfrather Golf Club.

Runners-up were Joan Wilson and Ann Pledger also from The Warren, with 73 Stableford points.

And in third place were June Grief and Virginia Beaumont, both from Thorndon Park, with 69 points.

All 96 ladies entered turned up for the competition and a good day was had by all.

Prizes were presented by Beverly Lewis and the club's Lady Captain Helen Morgan, who was delighted to present Beverly with a copy of the club's centenary book.

PAT Rogers won Ballards Gore Ladies' club championship on 186 with Lorna Harrison-Betts runner-up on 201.

The Rogers Par 18 event went to June Barlow on net 77 from June Ward (82).

The Silver Division medal was won by Gill Hawkins (net 74) from Pat Rogers (75).

Bronze Division winner was Mel Oliver (net 73) from June Barlow (75).

Guest day saw morning competition for a four ball better ball which Pat Rogers and Carole Swaffer (Upminster) 44 points from June Barlow and Linda Aylett (41).

The latter won on countback from Gill Hawkins and Guylaine Carriere (France) - the latter being over here on holiday.

The French connection continued when Guylaine won both the straightest drive and nearest the pin.

The Slimmers' Trophy was won by June Barlow (net 72) from Margaret Rowe (77).

Lady Captain's day was played in glorious sunshine with a very good turnout from the club.

Lady Captain's Prize was won by Mel Oliver with a superb 44 points. Second was Kathy Walsh on countback from Penny Paton after both finished on 38 points.

The men's competition was won by Colin Langstone on 43 points, Scratch prize winner was Duncan Johnson (86).

June Barlow's brilliant run of form saw her handicap cut to 28.
