SOUTHEND United are interested in bringing midfielder Sam Mantom back to the club, Echosport understands.
The 26-year-old ended last season with the Shrimpers on loan from Scunthorpe United, making seven appearances.
And Blues are now attempting to bring Mantom to Roots Hall on a permanent basis.
Mantom still has a year left on his Scunthorpe contract but faces an uncertain future with the Iron who were beaten in the semi-final of the play-offs last season.
However, Blues are also keen on signing striker Tom Hopper who lined up for Scunthorpe United last term.
The 24-year-old - who has previously played for Leicester City and Bury - netted nine goals for the Iron during the previous campaign but was not offered a new deal.
Blues boss Chris Powell is keen to strengthen his options in attack and is also believed to be interested in signing Blackpool's Kyle Vassell.
The striker - who is currently considering a contract offer from the Seasiders - scored 11 goals in 29 appearances last season.
