Echo:

SOUTHEND United were supported by a keen duo in Spain yesterday.

Kevin and Dan McEvoy travelled from Hockley to watch the Shrimpers’ clash against Aberdeen - but only after a last minute change of plan.

“We were originally going to Barcelona but when I saw Southend were playing in Spain I asked if we could go there instead,” said Dan.

“We looked at whether or not we could get the train down from Barcelona but it would have taken four hours so we decided against it and came here instead.

“It’s good to have a holiday combined with watching Southend so we’ve enjoyed it.”

Blues fielded a different line-up in each half at the impressive Oliva Nova resort in Spain but were unable to see off their young opponents.

Chris Powell’s side had to settle for a 1-1 draw despite taking the lead through Amadou Ba.

But Kevin felt there were still signs of promise from the Shrimpers and was particularly impressed by one of the new arrivals.

“I thought Timothee Dieng was very good,” said Kevin.

“He was a real threat in the air and I think that will give us something different this season.

“He almost scored with one header and one or two others did OK too. Sam Barratt also looked very composed after making the step up from non-league.”
