JOSH Raddon is celebrating winning two gold medals at the Elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Junior World Championships.

Josh travelled to Wolverhampton for the biggest junior BJJ competition ever held in the United Kingdom.

More than 1,600 competitors from all over the world took part in the contest.

But it was 11-year-old Josh, from Steeple View, who triumphed - much to the delight of his mother Sara.

“Josh got double gold and it was fantastic to watch,” said Sara.

“It was the biggest junior BJJ competition the UK has ever seen and people came from all over the world to take part.

“People were there from Australia and Brazil so for Josh to get two golds was a big achievement and we’re obviously very proud.”

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art where the idea is to take down your opponent and submit them by using various chokes and locks.

Josh first took up the sport three years ago and has worked tirelessly to get to the top.

“Josh is very committed and he trains three times a week under his black belt professor Luc Lamude at Lamude BJJ in Basildon,” said Sara.

“Josh also travels to London every Sunday for extra No-Gi training at 10th Planet under his instructor Nathan Kay.”

Such dedication led to Josh’s double success in Wolverhampton.

But it was not the first time the youngster has triumphed.

“Josh has competed in almost 30 competitions and has achieved 34 medals now,” said Sara.

“He is a former English and National Champion.

“He won both a bronze and silver medal at the European Championships and a bronze at the British Open.

“He has now achieved a gold medal in both the World Gi and No-Gi events in his divisions - grey belt, 10-11, under 40kg No-Gi, under 42kg Gi.”

Josh won all six of his fights to secure his latest gold medals.

The youngster - who will start at Billericay School in September - won five of his battles by submission and the other on points.

But Josh is determined to build on his success and has set his sights high.

“His ambition is to compete at the Pan-Am tournament in California, which is the biggest BJJ competition in the world,” said Sara.

“But he is currently looking for local sponsors to support him on his BJJ journey.”
