CANVEY Island’s Laurence Shearcroft admits his team have a great chance of finishing the season strongly after they toppled top dogs Bentley.

Shearcroft and co headed to Bentley aware of the size of the challenge but were emphatic 56 run winners.

Jamie Casson (63) and Shearcroft (41) led the way with the bat as Canvey reached 211 and Bentley were all out for 155 in 33.5 overs - Dan Lee (3-32) and Casum Tiffin (3-38) the standout performers.

“It was a brilliant result for the club,” said Shearcroft. “We had them really frustrated as it was a must-win match for them. They were at 35/5 at one stage and everyone performed.

“That is what we are capable of and we are back up and running now ahead of the final two matches.

“A score of more than 200 was good and we knew we had a good chance at the halfway point.

“We can finish strongly now against Brookweald and Rettendon and if we win they can go down. It is always nice to send your rivals down.”
