RUGBY League star George Wood enjoyed a Germany debut to remember as he bagged two tries in a 24-4 win against the Czech Republic.

Wood - who qualifies to play due to his German born grandfather - touched down twice in Osnabruck and was thrilled to start his international career in such fine style.

“It was an unbelievable experience,” said Wood, who lined up at left-centre.

“I’m sure it’s a story I’ll be telling for a while and I still don’t honestly believe it.”

Germany led 6-0 at half-time before piling on the pressure after the break.

And Wood - who plays his club rugby for Southend Sharks - was impressed by how quickly things came together for the Germans.

“For a team that has only had a very short preparation period, we came together nicely which is down to the coaches Bob Doughton and Simon Cooper,” said Wood.

“The other three heritage players really helped pull the team together.

“The other boys come from professional teams in England, which really showed.

“Brad Billsborough was from the Swinton Lions, Connor Hampson from Halifax and Ben Dent from Newcastle Thunder, along with me!”

Germany’s victory came in the European Championship group C North World qualifier.

And Wood is keen to build on the win.

“My next game will be in mid-September in Norway,” he said.

“If we put the hard work in and overcome Norway we will progress to a play-off game against either Ukraine, Greece or Malta.

“If we win that we move in to the main European competition which puts us that much closer to the World Cup which would be brilliant.”

Wood will now be focusing on playing rugby union with Southend Saxons, whose new season gets underway with a trip to Eton Manor this weekend.

But the 22-year-old will be going into the game on a real high after his try-scoring exploits with Germany.

“They were well-worked team efforts,” said Wood.

“I was just glad to be on the end of them.

“The fact I’ve scored two international tries still doesn’t feel real but hopefully this is just the start for me.”
