BASILDON United held their nerve to beat Tilbury 2-1 and maintain their 100 per cent record in the Isthmian North.

Eljay Worrell and Marcus Bowers got the decisive goals for the Bees.

After a low key opening, the game needed a spark and it was provided by Worrell.

Back in the side, the Basildon left back picked up a loose ball that was not cleared and blasted into the far corner.

Tilbury had not threatened Connor Wheatley’s goal but, on 25 minutes, the scores were level. The ball was threaded through a huge hole in the Basildon defence and James Walker finished composedly.

Seconds after the break, Simon Peddie headed wide as Tilbury passed up an excellent opportunity to take the lead and Basildon pounced.

Marcus Bowers scored from the edge of the penalty area after a flowing move down the right had worked its way across the edge of the box.

Wheatley made a fine block in the final 15 minutes while Jack Adlington-Pile spurned a terrific chance to put the game to bed.

But it was not to matter for the away side.

Canvey Island recorded a much needed three points and got a clean sheet to boot as they defeated Bury Town 2-0.

The Gulls had gone three games without a goal but only needed eight minutes to break the deadlock against Bury.

Jordan Cox sent in a teasing right wing cross and Frankie Merrifield was on hand the nod the ball into the goal.

Cox was enjoying himself and sent a header against the top of the right hand post as he searched for his first goal of the campaign.

Frankie Merrifield saw two chances smothered to safety by away stopper Luis Tibbles before the game was wrapped up in the final 10 minutes.

Mitchell Gilbey’s strike was saved but only into the path of Marlon Agyakwa who finished high into the goal.

Bowers & Pitsea produced a stunning rearguard display to earn the spoils at AFC Sudbury.

Rob Small’s team played an hour with 10 men following David Knight’s red card but were able to hold out for a fifth consecutive clean sheet.

Bowers had been in superb form at the start of term and got their first of the afternoon on 14 minutes.

A well worked free-kick routine resulted in the ball falling to Quentin Monville and he scored his first goal for the club and the only goal of the match.

Bowers were well in control and failed to extend their lead courtesy of missed chances from Lewis Manor and Martyn Stokes.

But the game changed on the half hour when Knight was shown a straight red card for a late challenge on the home goalkeeper.

But the visitors coped well with a man disadvantage. A Phil Kelly strike was ruled out on the hour as Bowers soaked up much of the pressure from a potent Sudbury attack.

The three points sees Bowers make it seven points from their three league games to date.

Great Wakering Rovers battled back from a goal down to take a point in their home clash against Brentwood Town.

Albert Levett, recently signed from East Thurrock United, made no mistake from the penalty spot to put Town ahead on 20 minutes.

But Great Wakering levelled on the half hour. Simon Thomas brought parity and that was how it stayed.
