SOUTHEND United’s Isaac Hutchinson built on his memorable first team debut by firing home a hat-trick in the Shrimpers under 23 team’s 6-3 win against Barnet this afternoon.

Hutchinson - who scored just 52 seconds after entering the action against Cambridge United in the Checkatrade Trophy last Tuesday - netted a trio of strikes against the Bees.

And the 18-year-old was happy to enjoy another memorable match as he strives to work his way back into Chris Powell’s plans.

“It was really nice to build on last week and keep going,” said Hutchinson.

“I haven’t had a hat-trick in a while so it’s nice to get one.

“I wanted to make sure my levels didn’t drop. I wanted to make sure my standards stayed high and continue where I left off.

“My main aim to get another chance in the first team and that’s what I’m aiming towards.”

Hutchinson caught the eye in an entertaining encounter at Boots & Laces but it was Barnet who raced into an early two goal lead.

Blues hit back with a well-controlled effort from Renei Batlokwa before the visitors extended their lead with a neat half volley at the near post.

The Shrimpers replied with a close range effort from Hutchinson after Stephen Hendrie’s left wing cross had been deflected into his path.

And, just moments later, Hutchinson brought Blues back level with an excellent effort which flew into the top left hand corner.

Moments later, Barnet were reduced to 10 men when a midfielder was dismissed for powerfully throwing the ball into Michael Klass’s face.

Blues took control in the second half with Norman Wabo netting with a well-taken effort left-footed shot before Hutchinson did likewise to complete his hat-trick.

Substitute Emile Acquah then completed the scoring with an individual effort to leave coach Kevin Maher a happy man.

“I was pleased with the goals we scored but we were sloppy at the start and gave away some bad goals,” said Maher.

“Isaac’s playing really well at the moment and he took his goals well but it was a decent exercise because people got the minutes they needed.

“But we’ll look at this game and learn from it because we did give away some sloppy goals.”
