SOUTHEND United supporter Brad Cooper was left suffering birthday blues after seeing his side lose at Shrewsbury Town.

Chris Powell’s side were seen off 2-0 by the Shrews at the Montgomery Waters Meadow on Saturday.

But adding to Cooper’s woes was an accumulator bet which saw him cash out early and miss out on an additional £430.

“It was a good day all round really,” laughed Cooper, who turned 22 at the weekend.

“In terms of the game I thought we were poor, we lacked any kind of creativity going forward and looked dire in all honesty.

“The subs didn’t make an impact but I did think Taylor Moore was a shining light.

“That was a positive but overall it was a very bad performance and the bet I put on didn’t really help my mood either.”

Cooper, who travelled to the game with a group of friends, picked out eight teams for his accumulator with the first letter of each of the sides spelling out the word birthday.

But Cooper paid the price for not waiting until the final whistle.

“The bet was a bit of a joke and I built it using teams beginning with the letters that make up the word birthday,” said Cooper.

“That meant I had to have Yeovil as they’re the only team beginning with y and they won 6-0 at Newport which was probably a sign.

“But when I looked at the scores, Doncaster and Hibs were losing so I thought it was a good time to cash out. I only put £1 on and I cashed out for £10 which at the time I thought was alright.

“However, they came back to win and I could’ve got £440. It definitely wasn’t my day!”
