BEN McKeith is relishing his return to action at Westcliff.

The experienced fly-half feared he might not play rugby again after a bad knee injury five years ago.

But, after just a couple of appearances last season, McKeith has been more involved this time around and is loving being back on the pitch with Westcliff.

“I had a bad injury five years ago and I wasn’t sure if I’d ever play again if I’m honest,” said McKeith.

“The team did well in the 2016/17 season and I really enjoyed the season and being part of the coaching team meant I saw that first hand.

“So last season I gave it another go but, unfortunately, I injured the same knee two games in.

“I’m getting on a bit now so this season was really my last chance to see if I still had it.”

McKeith’s experience has proved key in Westcliff winning all three of their matches in the London & SE Premier Division season so far.

And he has quickly settled back into the team.

“The team hasn’t changed too much but much of the same group have adapted to the physicality in this league now,” said McKeith, who was among the try scorers in last weekend’s 42-10 win against Hertford.

“I think that’s the main reason for the improvement in the last few years and it’s been a great start this season.

“We’ve never won three on the bounce to start the season but it’s too early to tell how good those results really are.

“However, we certainly couldn’t have asked for any more up to now though.”

Westcliff sit second in the standings after their trio of victories.

But McKeith is expecting a tough test at Tunbridge Wells this weekend.

“They were one of my tips to be at the top this year after a good showing in their first season at this level last year and the money they have to recruit players,” said McKeith.

“League favourites Wimbledon got a good result there two weeks ago so if we really do want to be mentioned in the same breath then it’s important we get a good result.”
