FREDDY Eastwood bagged his first goal of the season to help Southend United’s youth team trounce Leyton Orient 5-0.

Eastwood - who is the son of the Shrimpers legend with the same name - bagged his side’s third goal of the game as he worked his way onto the scoresheet for the first time with the under-18s.

And Blues coach Dave Huzzey was delighted with the display.

“It was a good game for us and of course it was pleasing for Freddy to score,” said Huzzey.

“It was his first start in the league this season and I thought he did well.

“Charlie Kelman was incredibly unselfish to set him up with a great pass and it was pleasing to see it go in. But there was a lot to be pleased about.”

Blues opened the scoring against the O’s after 34 minutes with Jon Benton on target.

The promising midfielder - who netted a hat-trick at Newport County in mid-September - fired home after Kelman had been denied by the Orient goalkeeper.

And, just before the break, Benton was again on target as he curled home an impressive free-kick to earn praise from Huzzey.

“We want to be scoring goals from all areas, not just the strikers, and Jon has certainly stepped forward where that’s concerned,” said Huzzey.

“He’s been playing really well and he’s been good in training too.”

Eastwood’s fine finish soon extended Blues’ lead in the second half before Matt Rush teed up Kelman to score in the 87th minute.

However, the Shrimpers were still not finished and, deep into stoppage time, Rush completed the scoring with a fine effort to continue his good start to the season.

But, despite the five goals, Huzzey was most pleased by the defending as Blues shut out their hosts.

“We had worked on our defensive shape because we had been conceding too many goals so for us to get a clean sheet against a team like Orient is great,” said Huzzey, whose side had been beaten 5-1 by Peterborough United in the previous encounter.

“We just have to make sure we keep going now because it was an excellent display at both ends of the pitch.”

Blues are back in action against MK Dons at Boots Laces on Saturday morning.
