SOUTHEND United goalkeeper Mark Oxley cannot wait to return from his ‘never ending’ suspension at Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.

The Shrimpers shot-stopper has missed the last four games after being sent off for violent conduct against Charlton Athletic at the start of September.

And Oxley is keen to make up for lost time.

“It feels like it’s been a never-ending suspension and it’s probably been the longest three weeks of my career,” said the Blues captain.

“When you’re out suspended you’re no good for anyone and it makes you hungrier to get back out there too.”

Oxley was forced to miss his first League games since the end of the 2016/17 season after the red card he received against Charlton.

Oxley was dismissed, along with team-mate Michael Kightly, after he appeared to throw a punch in stoppage time against the Addicks.

And the 27-year-old heavily regrets the incident.

“It’s not something I look back on with fondness and it’s certainly not going to be a highlight in my career,” said Oxley.

“Of course I regret what happened but I’ll make sure I learn from it.

“Just like Michael Kightly, it was the first red card of my career so it’s not like it’s a big problem.

“But the people around me have been brilliant and I can’t wait to get back out there to carry on with the season again.”

Blues will also be making the trip to Wycombe fresh from beating Fleetwood Town 1-0 at Roots Hall last time out.

And Oxley - who will replace the departed David Stockdale this weekend - was delighted to see the Shrimpers return to winning ways having previously suffered three League One defeats in succession.

“I went to all of the games during my suspension and it was fantastic to see them beat Fleetwood because it was exactly what we needed,” said Oxley.

“But like I’ve said all along it’s about consistency in this League so we have to make sure we have that and get another good result at the weekend.”

The Shrimpers will make the trip to Adams Park on Saturday sitting 16th in the League One standings, two points and two places above Wycombe Wanderers.
