MARK Bentley has replaced Danny Heale as the manager of Canvey Island.

The Gulls chief has stepped down after more than five years in the top job, due to an increase in his other work commitments.

Former Grays manager Bentley takes over, having been out of management since leaving Athletic in April 2016.

And Heale, who also enjoyed a successful playing career at Canvey, said it was a tough decision to make.

“I love the club but my work commitments are on a new level," he said. "I’m away a bit more and that’s the only reason I am doing this.

“It’s a sad day for me to be honest although I am not going anywhere. The time is right. I was 32 when I took over and I don’t know whether I’ll go back to management but it is the right thing to do now.”

Despite stepping down, Heale – who helped appoint Bentley alongside chairman John Batch - will remain at the club in the position of director of football.

Heale was named manager in May 2013 but the team struggled to make an impact in the Isthmian Premier League.

A 13th place finish in the first season was followed by 17th and 14th position finishes. The 2017 season ended in relegation although they almost bounced back at the first attempt – losing in last season’s Isthmian North play-off final.

Bentley added the move came about very quickly, having been working in academy football since leaving Grays.

And he is excited at the prospect of taking over the Gulls, with his first match in charge set to be at home against Tilbury next Saturday.

“I heard the position was open last week and it has all happened very quickly,” said Bentley, who is also working at Stevenage’s football academy.

“I have been desperate to get back into management since I left Grays, in honesty. I feel I have unfinished business as a manager and a coach.”

And chairman Batch added while he was sad to see Heale step down he was pleased he has decided to remain at the club in some capacity.

“Danny is a lovely boy,” said Batch. “But he will remain at the club and be a big part of things. He is a people person and he can bring those skills onto the board.

“Mark is determined, has a great work ethic and a never say die attitude and that is what you want in a manager.”
