CANVEY Island suffered a third defeat in four games, losing 29-12 at home to London Three Essex leaders Chelmsford.

The setback left Canvey ninth in the standings and director of rugby Alex Breading felt some late changes hit his team hard.

“The first team squad wasn’t finalised until midday on Friday and we had to rejig it on Saturday morning and this told in the early stagesof the game,” said Breading.

“In the second half we were calmer and collected and played some good rugby and had some big carries.

“It’s been a tough start to the league and we have been plagued by injuries which hasn’t helped with the continuity of the squad.

“But the players that have stepped up have shown they belong.”

Canvey were forced to make seven changes to their squad and also fielded several players out of position against a strong Chelmsford side who started strongly.

The visitors raced into a 17-0 lead before Canvey hit back with a try from winger Jon Campion.

However, on the stroke of half-time, Chelmsford scored another try to lead 22-5 at the break.

At the start of the second half, Canvey’s Harley Skidmore was yellow carded for a high tackle but once he returned the hosts took control.

As a result, Chelmsford had four players yellow carded during the remainder of the match but they were still able to extend their lead with another try.

But Canvey - who found it hard to break through Chelmsford’s defence - did score late on with Scott Floyd claiming a try Damon Cooper converted.
