C&K Basildon Ladies will be looking to pick up their first win of the season when Watford Ladies visit the Frost Hire Stadium this evening.

While Watford are flying high in the FA Women’s National League Southern Premier Division, C&K Basildon currently find themselves rooted to the foot of the table.

However, C&K Basildon will take confidence from a fine performance in the 4-1 defeat to league leaders Coventry United.

After a fairly even opening 10 minutes, C&K Basildon found themselves behind when Amber Hughes’ strike from a narrow angle gave Coventry an early lead.

Jade Formaston then doubled Coventry’s lead, after 20 minutes, when she headed home from close range.

Despite the early setback, C&K Basildon battled back and almost pulled a goal back when captain Alex Bailess’ pass sent Maddie Thomas clear of the Coventry defence. Thomas’ chip cleared the goalkeeper but landed on the roof of the net.

However, the visitors did halve the deficit shortly before half-time, when Katie Whitehead won the ball on the edge of the Coventry penalty area before lifting her shot over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net.

C&K Basildon almost equalised minutes after the restart.

Bailess sent Holly Turner clear of the hosts’ defence but her shot went just over the crossbar.

Formaston restored Coventry’s two-goal lead by completing her brace midway through the second half while Amy Watham scored from close range to put the game beyond C&K Basildon.
