SOUTHEND & Benfleet Hockey Club’s juniors impressed in an Essex Mini League under-10s and under-12s tournament.

The club went head-to-head with the likes of Brentwood, Upminster and Old Southendian.

And head coach Adele Cole was proud of the youngsters’ performances.

Cole said: “It was a fantastic start to the season.

“We’ve had a record number of youngsters playing their first matches.

“I can’t wait to see them progress.”

The under-12 boys and girls remained unbeaten throughout the whole tournament.

Wins were recorded against Brentwood and Old Southendian by the under-10 boys but they also suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat to Upminster.

The club fielded two under-10 girls teams, which included players of the tournament Cydney Thorn - who scored eight times - and Sofia Dabbs.

Meanwhile, Southend & Benfleet’s first team were condemned to a 4-3 defeat by Burnt Ash.

Sandy Pass was handed her Southend & Benfleet debut but she was unable to prevent Burnt Ash moving into an early lead.

However, Southend & Benfleet levelled as Ashlie Bolton converted after some fine build-up play.

Burnt Ash restored their advantage by scoring from two penalty corners in quick succession before half-time.

Despite Bolton grabbing her second goal and Kirsty Durban also getting on the scoresheet, Burnt Ash scored once again after the break to seal the win.

But Southend & Benfleet’s second string side enjoyed more joy as they ran out 3-0 winners against Old Loughtonians’ fourth team.

Lily Cole, Claire King and Louise Marsack got their names on the scoresheet.

And Marsack was eager to praise the team’s recent additions.

The captain said: “We have had five new members join the team this season.

“They have brought a burst of energy with them, which showed in the way we played.”

Southend & Benfleet dominated proceedings and player of the match Charlotte Brooks was quickly causing plenty of problems for the opposition.

The opener came courtesy of Cole directing a Lora Sharples pass into the corner of the goal.

King found the backboard after the interval and Marsack completed the scoring.

However, Southend & Benfleet’s third team were condemned to a 5-0 defeat by Waltham Forest and the fourth team lost 1-0 to Romford’s second string side.
