CANVEY Island’s director of rugby Alex Breading was overjoyed after seeing his side triumph 31-0 at Millwall.

The victory was Canvey’s second of the London Three Essex season.

And Breading was quick to praise his players.

“To say I am happy is an understatement,” said Breading.

“Everything we have been trying to move from the training ground to game day looked like it was coming together.

“Our forwards were dominant and our backs, particularly in defence, didn’t put a foot wrong.

“We still have aspects of the game that need addressing but that will be sorted in training.”

Canvey opened the scoring when Brett Smith’s kick through the Millwall defence enabled fly-half Charlie Clarke to touch down and score before he also added the conversion to make it 7-0.

Moments later came the best try of the game as second row Luke Lanza broke out of his own half before passing to Jason Fardell, who in turn teed up winger Dan Gillett to score.

Clarke again added the extras to put Canvey 14-0 ahead at half-time.

After the break, a try from Scott Floyd increased Canvey’s lead, which Clarke converted before he also kicked a penalty to make it 24-0.

The Islanders’ pack continued to dominate and that led to a penalty try which completed the scoring and secured an emphatic away win.

Canvey - who defended well to stop Millwall scoring a single point - now sit sixth in the table with 11 points from their first five games of the season.

Breading’s side will now be looking to build on the victory when they head to Old Cooperians next time out.

l Billericay suffered a 17-12 defeat at Clacton in Essex One.

Billericay now sit eighth in the 10 team table.
