ECHOSPORT talks to Gillingham supporter Matt Boughton ahead of tomorrow’s game with the Shrimpers at the Priestfield Stadium.

Gillingham currently find themselves 19th in the League One table. What has been your take on the campaign so far?

“After a promising start, winning our opening two games and playing well against Sunderland and Barnsley, things really tailed off as we went 10 games without victory.

“But hopefully last week’s deserved win at leaders Portsmouth will put us back on track.”

What were the hopes for Gillingham this season?

“Having flirted with relegation in each of the past two seasons, most fans would have taken mid-table mediocrity this season.

“But this is our sixth consecutive season since promotion at this level so the club needs to kick on.”

Who would you say is Gillingham’s main dangerman?

“Tom Eaves is arguably our biggest threat.

“The strong, powerful target man has scored more goals in League One this calendar year than anyone except Brett Pitman.

“His goal against Portsmouth last week showed his undoubted quality.

“When he’s on his game he is unplayable.

“Keep an eye out for Dean Parrett in midfield too.

“Our winless run coincided with his injury and he’s been an excellent summer signing.

“He controls the game from central midfield well.”

What are Gillingham fans hoping for this season now after what has been an inconsistent start?

“Our biggest hope would be to start beating some of the teams around us so we can push on up the table and perhaps challenge the top half as we did in the middle of last season.”

What’s the team news for tomorrow’s game with Southend?

“We’ve an unexpected striker shortage with Regan Charles-Cook and Brandon Hanlon injured, and Josh Parker on international duty.

“Experienced full-back Barry Fuller will apparently miss the game too so expect a few changes from our last League game.”

What’s the predicted starting line-up for Gillingham in the match this weekend?

Holy, O’Neill, Ehmer, Zakuani, Garmston, Lacey, Byrne, Parrett, Reilly, List, Eaves
