SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell was quick to praise Stephen Hendrie’s part in the Shrimpers’ 2-0 win at Gillingham.

Hendrie - who was handed his first League start since December -lined up as Blues’ left-sided centre-back.

And Powell was happy with the way Hendrie adapted to his unfamiliar role having previously been more used to playing as a full-back.

“I’m pleased for Stephen,” said Powell.

“He’s very quiet and he doesn’t say much which is unusual for a Scotsman!

“But he trains well and he gets on with it.

“There has been times when he’s not been in the 18 or on the bench but I will never be afraid to play any of our players and he gave us good balance.”

Hendrie looked comfortable in a more central role and Powell felt the defensive display was key in the Shrimpers coming out on top.

“We defended stoutly and manfully,” said Powell.

“The boys defended (Tom) Eaves brilliantly because he’s a tough customer who is very awkward to play against.

“But Micky Turner, Taylor Moore and Stephen all did well and we made good defensive decisions which was the key to the whole game.”

Powell also brought on the fit-again Harry Lennon in the closing stages and expects to have John White and Tom Hopper available against Coventry City on Saturday.

“Hopefully John and Tom will be back next week,” said Powell.

“This game was a day or two too soon and we didn’t want to risk them.”
