STEPHEN Hendrie is relishing his return to Southend United’s starting line-up - despite being selected in a position he had never played before.

The 23-year-old had previously been used only as a left-back in his career.

But the Scotsman is enjoying playing in a more central role.

“I hadn’t ever played in the centre before the last couple of games but I was just buzzing to be back in the team, especially in the League,” said Hendrie.

“I don’t really mind where I’m picked, I just want to play so I’ve been enjoying it and I was happy with the way it went at Gillingham at the weekend.”

Hendrie played as the Shrimpers’ left-sided centre-back in a back three against the Gills.

And he was thrilled to help Chris Powell’s side record a 2-0 win on the road.

“I thought we played well and it was a good win for us,” said Hendrie.

“In the first half we had a wee bit of defending to do but we did well to get the clean sheet and the three points, which was really pleasing.

“I really enjoyed being a part of it too.”

Hendrie’s display was his sixth appearance of the season so far and saw him make his first League start since lining up at Bristol Rovers last December.

But Hendrie - who ended last season on loan at Motherwell - has not been frustrated by his lack of appearances this term.

“When I went out on loan last season I knew it was going to be like this when I came back,” said Hendrie.

“But I just knew I would have to keep on working hard until I got an opportunity so that’s why I was so pleased to have got one in the last couple of games.”

Hendrie lined up alongside Taylor Moore and Michael Turner at the back for Blues.

And he now hopes to have done enough to stay in the starting line-up for Saturday’s clash with Coventry City at Roots Hall.

“It’s a big game and of course I would love to play in it,” said Hendrie.

“But if I’m not picked then I’ll just continue to work hard in training to make sure I make the most of the next chance that comes along for me.”

Saturday’s win made it five games unbeaten for the Shrimpers, who have now taken 13 points from the last 15 on offer to work their way up to ninth in the League One standings.

Blues will now be looking to continue the good run against a Coventry side who are currently 12th in the table, two points below Southend.
