BRINN Bevan is feeling the pressure after it was confirmed he will represent Great Britain at the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships later this month.

Bevan was originally named as a travelling reserve as fellow South Essex Gymnastics Club member Max Whitlock was named in the five man starting squad along with Dom Cunningham, Joe Fraser, Nile Wilson and James Hall.

However, Wilson has been forced to drop out of the squad due to sustaining a finger injury and, as a result, Bevan will represent his country for the first time in more than a year.

Bevan, who is from Thundersley, said: “I’m a little bit confused about how to feel.

“I was selected as the travelling reserve but I have now gone to being part of the official starting team.

“It’s given me a complete change in mindset.

“I didn’t feel any self-pressure before but I do now and it’s kind of scary.

“I haven’t competed for Great Britain in over a year and I’m so excited to get out there.”

The former Deanes School pupil will now compete in the major competition, which is being held at the Aspire Academy Dome in Doha, Qatar from October 25.

However, Bevan wishes he had not gained a place in the five man squad due to one of his fellow gymnasts picking up an injury.

The 21-year-old, who was part of the British team to compete in the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, added: “I’m really sorry for Nile.

“As much as I wanted my space on the team, I didn’t want it to come this way and I’m heartbroken at his decision.

“I really hope I can make him and the country proud and I’ll be sending him a gift in the post.”

Wilson’s injury came in training on the parallel bars, following which he was assessed by the British Gymnastics medical team.

The World Championships presents the first opportunity for teams to qualify for a place at Tokyo 2020.

And James Thomas, the British Gymnastics performance director, believes Bevan and his team-mates must grab the chance with both hands.

Thomas said: “Building on from the successes of the European Championships, we had a number of world class gymnasts competing for team selection and this gives us a real sense of excitement for the build up to Tokyo 2020.

“The selected team for Doha gives us a blend of high calibre gymnasts who will support our ambition to challenge the world’s best in the team event while also targeting medals.”
