DAVID Catchpole scored ‘one of the best goals’ captain Alfie Hibbard has ever seen as Old Southendian Hockey Club’s men’s first team prolonged their winning streak.

Old Southendian made the trip to Norwich City’s second team looking to grab another three points.

And Hibbard was overjoyed when Catchpole fired home the winner late on.

The skipper said: “When you win a game in the manner that we did, with a goal of such quality and improvisation, the five hour round trip doesn’t matter.

“It was one of the best goals I’ve ever seen.”

Travel problems on the way to Norfolk resulted in the visitors being unable to enjoy a full warm-up, but Old Southendian still got off to a flying start.

Tim Robinson notched his sixth goal of the season to put the away side ahead inside 45 seconds.

Old Boys failed to convert numerous short corner opportunities as they looked to extend their advantage.

Ben Cotton and Liam Peoples both came close to getting their names on the scoresheet, but the missed chances were to prove costly as Norwich capitalised on a short corner and equalised.

The final 15 minutes of the encounter were frantic and saw yellow cards shown to both teams.

However, Old Southendian secured victory thanks to a winning goal with just two minutes remaining.

Peoples launched a pinpoint aerial ball over the Norwich defence which was met with a superb volley by Catchpole.

And Old Boys were able to close out the final moments to wrap up a valuable triumph.

While the first team were celebrating a fine win, the second string side were deflated after losing 7-0 to a strong Plashet team.

The third team were involved in a goalless draw with Crostyx, but the fourth team were condemned to a 4-1 defeat by Tower Hamlets.

Despite the reverse, fourth team captain Noel Smith was impressed with the effort of the youngsters, who coped well in a physical clash.

Tim Goddard and George Baldwin were on target as the fifth team were 2-0 winners against Saffron Walden.

Meanwhile, the ladies first team lost 3-1 to East London’s fifth team as they continue to adjust to life after promotion.

The second string side were emphatic as Anna Cooper scored six goals in an 8-0 win over Old Loughtonians.

Ellie Turner and Chloe Foster also got their names on the scoresheet in the rout, while Cooper’s fine form saw her named in the England Hockey team of the week.

And coach Rich Cooper admitted he was confident his side would triumph.

“I just had a feeling about this one,” he said.

“I knew if they played well they would win, but the scoreline was beyond our expectations.

“The ladies were magnificent.”

The newest team in the club, the third team, lost 4-2 to an experienced Chelmsford side.
