WESTCLIFF will be gunning for a seventh win in eight games when they host Brentwood in an Essex derby tomorrow.

Westcliff’s fine start to the season sees them sitting second in the London & SE Premier Division.

But Greg Bannister - Westcliff’s top try scorer so far this season - believes the team will need to produce an improved performance to beat Brentwood at the Gables.

“Brentwood have started well for a team that only got promoted last year,” said Bannister.

“It’s also an Essex derby so I can imagine it will be physical.

“But we just have to make sure we up our performance from last week to make sure we give ourselves the best chance of winning the game.”

Brentwood have triumphed in four of their seven games so far this season and are fifth in the table.

But Westcliff will be heading into the game on a high after winning 29-20 at fellow high-flyers Guildford in a game which saw Bannister bag two more tries to take his season’s tally to six.

And the full-back was thrilled to get the victory.

“It was very pleasing to get the win,” said Bannister. “We made it hard for ourselves at times but after they beat us home and away last year, it was a happy changing room after the game.

“It’s been a great start for us and we want to keep on getting better as a team.

“I think it comes down to playing on a Saturday afternoon all as mates and not wanting to let each other down.

“It definitely makes winning feel a bit better and hopefully it will on Saturday too.”
