SOUTHEND United manager Chris Powell was left ruing his side’s poor finishing after a 1-1 draw against Crawley Town in the first round of the FA Cup.
The Shrimpers wasted a number of early chances to score before Michael Kightly fired them in front at Roots Hall.
But Southend ultimately paid the price for the missed chances as an 85th minute own goal from John White took the tie to a replay, much to the frustration of Powell.
“We didn’t take our chances,” said Powell.
“It’s not a case of what went wrong.
“We weren’t ruthless enough and we should’ve been three or four up by half-time.
“We’re still in the cup of course but what happened shouldn’t have happened because we should have been out of sight.
“If you want to be a winner you have to be ruthless and we should have put them out of sight.
“I don’t think we sat back at all as we still had chances but they decided to go a bit long “We didn’t handle it towards the end but credit to Crawley.
“In the last 20 minutes they threw caution to the wind."
